I actually like the new back/forward button. I rarely use the buttons to go back and forward, but for some reason I like them unified.

It would be nice for them to provide the options...especially since so many people do seem to dislike it.

I dug around for a solution but found nothing. If I ever do, I'll write it up.

I'm not happy about the unified button either...didn't like it in IE7, don't like it here, and I can't find a way to turn it off unless I want text on the buttons (which I don't). This is ridiculous. I'm going to Flock until Mozilla decides to stop forcing us to play by their rules.

Your Firefox 2 & 3 were probably using the same "profile"...there are ways to workaround this issue, but really, Firefox needs to default to different profiles for different versions, not overwrite or step on each other...

As a side note/question, I found this page looking to un-unify the back/forward buttons in Firefox 3. Can't some1 make an addon to do that? The reverse/opposite of this addon...

Unified Back-/Forward Button
addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2210

...that addon makes Firefox 2 Back & Forward like Firefox 3, but I want the opposite, to undo the Unified Back & Forward buttons for Firefox 3...I think it's fine if they unify them, but there needs to be a preference or even an about:config hack to undo that crap...or really just in the customize dialog have...Back, Forward & Unified Back/Forward (3 seperate buttons)...then people can drag whatever they want to the toolbar...

Chief, I never did get it resolved but I just downloaded the final Firefox 3 and deleted Firefox 2. I'm not a web developer so that is good enough for me.

Still, I am a programmer and think that what happened there is at least slightly disturbing.

Yes, I find this *severly* annoying also. I am running 2 3.0 RC2 because I am a developer and need to test sites in FF 2, but here's to hoping this gets sorted out by the 3.0 release? Maybe?

CJ, I do still use Firefox 2 when I need something to not crash (like when I'm buying something or doing online banking) and when I forget and accidentally click the Firefox 2 icon.

Firefox 3 still crashes quite a bit (4 or 5 times today) which is probably more of a plugin issue but if I have to disable my plugins then I wouldn't bother using Firefox 3. I expect Firefox 3 to be a little less stable up until the final release. What I don't expect is for something that happens when I launch Firefox 3 (and that I didn't even tell it to do in the first place) to change settings on my Firefox 2 install.

Why are you still using Firefox 2? Firefox 3 is pretty much ready to go - RC2 I believe.
