Viral Marketing: The Carrie Telekinetic Coffee Shop Surprise Prank

How would you react if you saw someone slam a guy against the wall and lift him up? Freak out? Laugh? Run away? You’d probably do all of the above which is what some patrons at the ‘sNice coffee shop in New York City did when they saw this very same thing happen.   The first thing that may come to your mind is that this is a prank or some elaborate hoax or maybe an advertising campaign. If you said the first and the last one you would be right. This whole thing was a set-up from start to finish by the people of Thinkmodo, the minds behind the Times Square TV screen hack video.   This was an advertising project requested by the company that created the new Carrie movie that will be showing in theaters come October 18th. Actually new is relative because while the actors and actresses in the movie are new, the story is not. The original Carrie was first shown in 1976.   Watch the Viral Video:   The set-up   Knowing that they had to create a big buzz for the movie the people at Thinkmodo decided to go all out. What it meant was commandeering a coffee shop somewhere in New York City and then retrofitting it so that it becomes the perfect tool to release some telekinetic mayhem.     This included setting up a fake wall and putting visual effects that will make any major movie studio proud. They also auditioned for the actress to play the power wielding main character as well as the unfortunate victim and...

Understanding Penguin 2.1 and The Hummingbird Algorithm Update Resource

I got several emails and private messages in my Facebook and Twitter  about how will the Penguin 2.1 and the recent Hummingbird Algorithm from Google will affect the SEO and Inbound Marketing industry. I compiled some best content and categorized them for easy resource for everyone who wants to know more about the recent updates. These articles I believe best represent on the said issue.   Google has just released the second, more updated version of its Penguin spam fighting algorithm. Technically it’s the fifth reiteration of it when you consider all the rollouts both major and minor but since it is based on the Penguin 2 (which is the fourth release) this latest version is dubbed the 2.1.   If that’s a bit confusing don’t be. Also don’t be confused by thinking that Penguin 2.1 will take over for Hummingbird. While hummingbird is for the entire search engine ranking system, Penguin is the spam filter for it. This means that because it is a filter it gets changed periodically in order to get more spam out of your search engine results – hence the many reiterations of it.   What came before: Penguin 2.0 – Penguin 2.1 is a tighter update of its predecessor, Penguin 2.0. Knowing about the past is important so you can understand the underpinnings of the current spam filter from Google.   Google’s Penguin 2.0 Algorithm: The Definitive Guide – A guide for a better understanding of Penguin 2.0   Dissecting Google Penguin 2.0: Why Sites Won or Lost Traffic [Study] – A case study as to the effects of Penguin 2.0  ...

Branded Content Marketing—Johnson & Johnson Style

It was 1 in the morning and wifey, then pregnant with our first child, was busy with her iPad reading page after page after page about what to expect on when you’re pregnant. I snooped in and observed the pages she was reading and I noticed something: every ad that I saw was from Johnson and Johnson. Suddenly, my brain juices were triggered. The website she was browsing through was BabyCenter Philippines. The first thing I asked myself was “Was this just a remarketing ad from Google adwords?” But no, every Johnson and Johnson impression was a banner ad located on different pages. I went to my PC and checked if there were other ads from other companies but all are from J&J. Now I wondered, who owns BabyCenter.Com? I checked some more and found out it was J&J. The website was branded and designed to publish content about pregnancy, baby, and parenting. Johnson and Johnson is practicing Branded Content Marketing. What is Branded Content? Branded content is content sponsored and/or produced by one entity or brand, as opposed to generic content riddled with a plethora of sponsors and advertisers. A sponsor collaborate with content producers to bring forth a creative idea and “sell” it to the consumers in a form that they want it. In the early 1900s, radio programs were sponsored by soap companies to connect with their audience (hence “soap operas”). This was their way of reaching out to their consumers. With branded content, what J&J (and companies like them) achieved was to create a website with quality content which are relevant to their target audience....
Post Penguin SEO Strategies – Learning from History

Post Penguin SEO Strategies – Learning from History

Learning from the past algorithmic changes by Google can save your site from being wiped out because of the latest Google Penguin update. This is a serious algorithmic change which has almost the same impact when the Google Florida update was rolled out in 2003. I suspect that the Google Florida update was the very baseline of what Panda and Penguin algorithm is now, only that there are more robust filters was added in the recent updates since February 2011. Learning from history will keep us from repeating our mistakes and the mistakes of others. I had audited a lot of websites since the Penguin Update hit and our agency is now really busy in website rehabilitations for our new clients that got hit by the new algorithm update and I had an opportunity to test and see what’s wrong with different websites. I emphasized that SEO nowadays should be more of long-term and semantically strategic. Be evergreen in your onpage and offpage optimization.Engagement with the users is very important and the users experience should be great so that you can boost your branding and not just your rankings. Check my post about Inbound Marketing 101: Quick Overview. The slides below were my presentation last May 12, 2012 for the 1st SEO Ilo-ilo conference. It was a full packed conference and was really impressed with how amiable and hospitable the crowd is. Well done to the organizers even there are snafus but in every event, I think that’s normal.
